Gowercroft Joinery: A Journey of Awards and Recognition

At Gowercroft Joinery, we take pride in our commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and sustainability. Over the years, we have earned numerous prestigious awards. Below is a closer look at the significant awards we have received and what they represent.

2016: Recognising Technical Excellence and Apprenticeship Support

BWF Technical Award Finalist for Juergen Teller’s London Studio

Gowercroft Joinery was shortlisted for the BWF Technical Award for our work on photographer Juergen Teller’s London studio, designed by 6a Architects. This project, nominated for the RIBA Stirling Prize, has been featured in national and architectural media. It has also hosted photoshoots with stars like Rihanna and Joaquin Phoenix. Our bespoke timber work was crucial to the studio’s design, combining technical precision with a sensitivity to architectural vision.

BWF Trainee of the Year

Winning the BWF Trainee of the Year reflects our dedication to developing young talent. This award highlights how we invest in apprentices by offering hands-on experience and training. Our commitment to nurturing the next generation of skilled craftspeople is a key part of our success.

2017: Celebrating Innovation in Heritage Window Design

Winner: Best Windows at Build It Awards for Heritage Range

Gowercroft Joinery won the Best Windows category at the Build It Awards for our Heritage Range, including the Winston Sliding Sash and Richmond Flush Casement windows. These products seamlessly combine the classic look of single-glazed windows with modern performance. Made from durable Accoya® timber and featuring vacuum glass, they offer superior thermal efficiency while maintaining an authentic heritage appearance.
The judges praised our windows, saying:
“When specifying windows, self-builders and renovators are looking for products that deliver on both aesthetics, design, and performance – a prospect only made more difficult when dealing with listed properties. The Richmond and Winston designs offer an outstanding solution, providing excellent U-values and ultra-thin profiles.”
This award recognises our ability to innovate and create windows that meet the unique requirements of listed properties.

Shortlisted: BWF Product Innovation Award for Heritage Range

Our Heritage Range was also shortlisted for the BWF Product Innovation Award. This shortlisting reflects our commitment to creating historically accurate designs using modern technology. We continue to innovate while preserving the past.

Winner: BWF Apprentice of the Year Award

One of our apprentices won the BWF Apprentice of the Year Award in 2017, recognising their hard work and dedication to the craft. This award highlights the exceptional quality of our apprenticeship programme and our ongoing commitment to developing the next generation of skilled craftsmen in the joinery industry.

2018: Continued Recognition for Innovation in Windows

Shortlisted: Build It Best Windows for Heritage Range

For the second year in a row, our Heritage Range was shortlisted for Best Windows at the Build It Awards. This ongoing recognition highlights the success of our Winston Sliding Sash and Richmond Flush Casement windows. Made from Accoya® timber and featuring ultra-thin vacuum glazing, these windows provide excellent insulation and low maintenance. They offer a perfect balance of traditional aesthetics and modern technology.

Finalist: G18 New Product of the Year for Expanded Heritage Range

At the G18 Awards, we were finalists for New Product of the Year with our expanded Heritage Range. This range includes the Winston Sliding Sash, Richmond Flush Casement, Belton Yorkshire Sliding Sash, and Churchill Single and French Doors. Combining traditional joinery with modern vacuum glazing and Accoya® timber, these products offer enhanced insulation, durability, and sustainability. Homeowners enjoy long-term cost efficiency while maintaining the look of traditional single-glazed windows.

2019: Award-Winning Heritage Restoration

Winner: BWF Technical Award for Templeton House

In 2019, we won the BWF Technical Award for our work on Templeton House, Winston Churchill’s former residence. This meticulous restoration required us to balance historic character with modern performance standards. Our Winston Sliding Sash windows, crafted from Accoya® timber with vacuum glazing, restored the property’s aesthetic integrity.
The restoration of Templeton House gained international acclaim, being featured in The Wall Street Journal and House and Garden. The property was even used as a filming location for Downton Abbey and Compare the Market advertisements. This recognition reflects our leadership in heritage joinery and our technical excellence.

Finalist: Derby Telegraph Business Awards for Templeton House Project

The Templeton House project also earned us a finalist position at the Derby Telegraph Business Awards. This recognition highlights both the local and international significance of the restoration. Our work on this historical property showcases our technical expertise and our ability to contribute to major cultural projects.

2021: Family Business Excellence and Corporate Innovation

Winner: Midlands Business Awards Family Business of the Year

We won the Midlands Business Awards Family Business of the Year in 2021. This award celebrates the strength and resilience of family-owned businesses in the region. It is a testament to our commitment to quality, innovation, and long-term success. The values that have guided us through generations, including craftsmanship, sustainability, and community engagement, were key to this win.

Winner: Corporate Livewire Innovation and Excellence Award

The Corporate Livewire Innovation and Excellence Award celebrates businesses that consistently innovate and excel. Our win reflects our dedication to enhancing product performance and customer service. It also highlights our focus on sustainable practices.

2022: Major Wins for Retrofit and Sustainability

Winner: BWF Award for Mews House Deep Retrofit Project

In 2022, Gowercroft Joinery won the BWF Heritage Project of the Year for our work on the Mews House Deep Retrofit Project, designed by Prewett Bizley, specialists in PassivHaus and retrofit architecture. This project required high thermal performance, long life expectancy, and a timber aesthetic similar to the original multi-pane windows.
We installed 16 Winston Sliding Sash windows with traditional timber joinery details. These included 18mm glazing bars, traditional fitch fasteners, pulleys, sash limiters, and period ironware. The project won the RIBA London Award 2022, the AJ Retrofit Award 2022 for Best House over £500k, and received a Highly Commended in the Retrofit Academy Awards (Small Project Category). It was also featured in Grand Designs Magazine.

Shortlisted: Made in Midlands Award for Templeton House Project

Our Templeton House project was also shortlisted for the Made in Midlands Award. This recognition highlights how we combine traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology to restore historic properties while meeting modern performance standards.

Our timber windows were shortlisted for Best Windows at the Build It Awards. This shortlisting recognises our ability to create durable, aesthetically pleasing, and energy-efficient windows for both heritage and modern homes.
